Avocado, (Persea americana), tree of the family Lauraceae and its edible fruit. Avocados are native to the Western Hemisphere from Mexico south to the Andean regions and are widely grown in warm climates. Avocado fruits have greenish or yellowish flesh with a buttery consistency and a rich nutty flavour. They are often eaten in salads, and in many parts of the world they are eaten as a dessert. Mashed avocado is the principal ingredient of guacamole, a characteristic condiment in Mexican cuisine. Avocados provide thiamine, riboflavin, and vitamin A, and in some varieties the flesh contains as much as 25 percent unsaturated oil.
Fuerte - A medium sized avocado with a relatively smooth dark green skin. The skin is thinner than some other varieties, so careful handling once picked is essential. Well-known for its delicious nutty flavour and being a little more tolerant of cold than some other varieties.
Bacon - is a popular variety that produces a good crop of attractive, large, dark green oval-shaped fruit. They are named after the original grower Mr James Bacon rather than for a flavour. The Bacon variety is especially good at coping with cooler temperatures.
